Chris and I had been together for 6 years. We had bought a beautiful Victorian farmhouse together in the city during the last year and I knew he was planning on proposing but I didn’t know when exactly. One day, I pulled some threads from a piece of fabric I was making curtains out of and I started to braid them together. It was purple and lovely so I tied it around Chris’s finger for fun with a tight knot on the ‘shank’ and it stayed. He liked it and it was comfortable.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Forward 3 months, I thought Chris was going to propose Apple Butter weekend where a tight knit group of family and friends gather to make, apple butter. Two weeks before we headed out to San Francisco area to attend my sister in-laws wedding. We had been outside of the city for three days, then stayed in the city for another 3 days for exploration, adventure and good food. On the 2nd day we decided to go to the Golden Gate Bridge Park and walk to the middle of the bridge.
Proposal in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge
.
We started walking, I kept wanting to stop and look back at the city but Chris kept saying let’s get to the middle and we'll look at the city on the way back. It made sense, we would then be facing the city. So we kept moving, enjoying the beautiful weather and the constant breeze from the bay. We made it to the middle! We stopped looked at the view and while I was immersed in visuals, Chris stopped a gentleman to take our photo and Bam…. he gets down on one knee and proposes right there in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge! And amidst the emotion what does he put on my finger? He ties a piece of nylon rope around it, yes, thick nylon rope. Talk about a statement ring! ;)
~~~~~~~~~~~~

As we slowly floated back across the bridge, we decided to go to Ghiradelli Square  via the beach, BTW, it’s a pretty decent hike. As we were walking, the constant breeze was doing significant damage to my newly acquired ‘ring’ and it was fraying, yes, that outer edge of the rope. I had a streamer about a foot long wafting from my finger. It was fun but not realistic to wear. Chris knew this.  And he already knew not to buy me jewelry because I’m picky about what I want, and especially for my engagement ring, a piece of jewelry that celebrates our forever love, that I will wear everyday, I must be a part of the process, in others words, I must make it.

Young and Carefree

.

In the meantime, we knew I couldn’t keep the nylon rope so we found a lovely store with a variety of goods from around the world and replaced the rope with a temporary stand-in silver ring made in Bali until I had my ‘real’ engagement ring finished. I knew exactly what I wanted. I set up an appointment with a local diamond dealer and invited Chris & his mom to join me to look at diamonds, so he could be a part of the decision. Then off to my mentor Robert, who I decided I wanted to made my engagement ring.  I always wanted a piece made by him and why not my engagement ring! And, it gave Chris the opportunity to present it to me without me seeing it finished first.

My wedding ring set. Custom designed platinum and diamond engagement ring and my custom designed 18k yellow gold wedding band and first year anniversary band. After 23 years they are holding stong, and I'm terribly hard on jewelry.

.

Being able to be a part of the creation process was perfect! I was able to design an asymmetrical platinum ring that I knew would transcend time, be unique to me and that I would then be able to have fun designing and making my wedding band and 1st year anniversary band to fit beautifully along each side. And, to this day I absolutely love it!

~~~~~~~~~~
As for Chris’s wedding ring, he wanted something simple, a solid platinum band with a gold ball that represents the original knot from the braided thread that I tied on his finger.
.
Older and carefree!
.
And through all of the varied chapters in our life together, we’re looking forward to experiencing all of the new adventures that will transpire in the chapters to come with our beautiful wedding rings that not only represent our unconditional love for each other, but they are personal, reflective, creative, distinctive, custom, modern heirlooms that will endure and be passed down to the next generation.
